SPORTSBRIEFS – John Ford

Golf

The Lorne Country Club golf course is playing beautifully over Autumn and the competition season is now well
underway with our Women members competing both at home in our local comp, as well as entering teams in the numerous regional competitions.

Since our last report in the Independent we have had teams in the following REGIONAL comps :
• Barwon Valley Challenge Bowl where Sue Neill won the B Grade comp with an excellent 39 pts.
• Colac Amenities Day where we entered 3 teams in a field of 105 players.
• Otway Pennant – the final round was played at Torquay where in a thrilling finish Colac came from 3rd place to take the flag, with the Lorne team being just pipped for 2nd by Apollo Bay.
• Otway Shield comp held at Clifton Springs, where around 10 of the Women that had represented Lorne throughout the Pennant comp made the trip to the Bellarine course hoping for a team victory, but we all found the greens and the bunkers not in our favour that day!!
• Division 7 Pennant began with the Lorne team of 5 playing against Queens Park at Clifton Springs, and although we were all a little nervous, the team won our first round 5-0. A great result and start to this comp. (Perhaps the earlier round that week at the course helped us!) Next round is to be played at Colac – Lorne vs Barwon Valley.

Club Golf

• The annual Women’s event – JUNE HUNT MEMORIAL 4 BBB event – Congratulations to our 2021 winners Lesley Goldsworthy and Jan Young. The competition was very close and was decided on a count back with Lynda Stewart and Jane Purdie beaten by just one point on the back nine. Both teams had an outstanding score of 40 points. It was Jan’s first comp win and so was extra exciting for her – their names will be engraved on the trophy too. Netball Pavilion will be completed in early March.

Following our super successful Give Golf Go day, we have been delighted to welcome a number of new Women players and Members, who are attempting to conquer this game of Golf – and also to form some new connections and friendships. Women’s Golf meets at the Lorne Country Club every Tuesday at 8.30am. If you are interested in joining our group of friendly women please call Sue Neill on 0418674062 or Chris Angus on 0439008167.

Regards and Happy Golfing. Danni De Bon.

Football and Netball are Under Way

The past three weeks have been quite eventful for the Dolphins footballers and netballers. On Thursday April 1st Lorne’s new netball pavilion was officially opened by Senator Sarah Henderson, leading a group of dignitaries
including politicians, councillors and voluntary committee representatives. The netballers have waited patiently for many years for this important upgrade to their change rooms and facilities. Also at this ceremony, the first official sods of earth were turned for the construction of the new football/ leisure centre pavilion.

The football and netball season started for Lorne on Easter Saturday when the Dolphins took on Alvie on a hot windy day at Stribling Reserve. Lorne’s senior football team led for most of the day, but only just managed to hold off a spirited charge from their opponents – Lorne winning by just one point.

Interestingly Lorne’s Reserves team lost by just one point. Lorne next took on South Colac which was always going to be a difficult match. South Colac started very well and worried Lorne with their pace, efficient ball use, strong marking and accuracy in front of goal. At half time Lorne trailed by 9.4:58 to 5.5:35.

Lorne had many opportunities in the third quarter but could manage only seven behinds. The last quarter was even worse for the Dolphins who were held scoreless. Lorne lost the match 14.6:90 to 5.12:42. Lorne is able to play much better football than what they showed on this occasion, but full credit must go to South Colac who played four quarters of very impressive football.
